the story so far....
Tonium has created a portable pocket sized DJ-ing device called the Pacemaker.
I joined up with their beta program last year and won a mix competition (with some funk) they held - and they've sent me one of the first Pacemakers for Free. (read: woohoo!)
and it arrived today! here's what came in the box:
Pacemaker Device
Assorted Cables (power/USB/lanyard)
Tote Bag
Fanny Pack
Earplug Case w/ Earplugs
Assorted Stickers & Buttons
2 T-Shirts
2 Snowcaps
2 Wristbands
and a Thank You Letter.
check below for photos, along with the "fortune cookie" fortunes they had printed inside the cable boxes.
so - onto the device:
the specs im sure you have read up on before, or if not just goto http://www.pacemaker.net
short summary:
120 GB music player
2 channels
crossfader
eqs
effects
the whole nine yards.
basically almost an entire dj setup in your pocket. 2 decks, a mixer and eqs etc, ready to go wherever you're going.
im not going to bore you with what's already been said in numerous reviews about the device. what i will tell you though is that its definitely designed with a DJ in mind. and its ALOT OF FUN. everything on it is placed where you think it would, and after about 15 or 20 minutes, i was mixing away with no problems whatsoever.
by no means is this a replacement for a proper dj setup in a club. but, its a great ADDITION to whatever current setup you may have. being able to mix on the train, on the way to work, playing an impromptu set at a friend's house/party just by plugging this into a stereo, taking it to the club as an extra set of audio sources to play along with your vinyl/serato/whatever.
so...
pros:
the ability to get creative with your music, whatever kind it is, wherever and whenever you want.
cons:
well let's face it folks, it runs 520 euros. and last i checked at the conversion rate that comes close to 800 dollars. granted i would have purchased one anyways cause im a gadget geek, but im sure the price will probably keep many away. just dont forget you're not just getting an mp3 player. to quote the guys over at gizmodo:
"You can finally say there's a party in your pants and everyone's invited and mean it."
P.S. - if anyone has any specific questions about the device please dont hesitate to ask. friends looking to get a demo and some hands on time with it send a PM my way.
also, come join the pacemaker music community at beta.pacemaker.net when it opens to the public on march 5th and see what all the fuss is about. |

haha how did i know that would spark a question?
im going to assume you mean the portable on the top. that my friend is a sound burger. back in the 80's it was Audio Technica's answer to the walkman. little did they know that people didn't want to walk around with portable record players if they had the option to use cassettes. it makes for a great tool when out digging though!
jubilee: yea all the clothing as well apparently they used american apparel wear. the device and all the schwag was stuffed in the bag. |
